How to get a Vietnamese visa in Luang Prabang (LP)

How to get a Vietnamese visa in Luang Prabang (LP) and how to get from LP to Sapa, north Vietnam
Many people seem to think it is impossible to arrange a Vietnamese visa while in Luang Prabang but I am here to tell you it is far from the beautiful truth! If you are planning on visiting Vietnam it is important to know the 2 options available –

1) A prearranged visa for both flying or at land border crossings from an embassy, a consulate or a travel agency.

2) An approval letter if you are flying into any of the 3 international airports – Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh or Da Nang. This approval letter is needed to show to the airport officials when you land at any of the above 3 airports. After showing this you will be stamped and let into the beautiful Vietnam! I would reccommend http://www.vietnamvisa.govt.vn as it is run by the government in Vietnam. Check the website for charges. There is a standard processing fee – and a stamping fee of $45 for everyone. I am sure you could apply for an approval letter at a Vietnamese consulate or an embassy but why not just organise the visa if you are going to take time to go there.

For many of us backpackers, flying is too expensive and we resort to a long bus journey. Many people head straight from Luang Prabang to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. But I am going to embark on a different route which will bring me all the way up to the luscious mountains of Sapa. I didn’t want to have to double loop myself with going to Hanoi to have to get a bus to Sapa and back down again. It doesn’t make sense espiecally when I am trying to budget travel. So I will need a pre – arranged visa for the historical Dien Bien Phu land border crossing where Vietnam rightfully won back their independence from the French in 1954.

Many resort to travel agencies which charge an extra price as they have to do all the running around for you. It literally saves money and its surprisingly hassle free. The employees seem very organised and speak fluent English.
